Medicare Advantage: Benefits, Costs, and Tradeoffs

Understand Medicare Advantage benefits, networks, prescription coverage, and out-of-pocket costs before deciding whether a plan fits your needs.

By Lifetime Medicare Partners. Updated September 28, 2026.

Medicare Advantage, also called Part C, is a way to receive your Medicare benefits through a private plan. Many plans include prescription coverage and additional benefits. The important question is how a specific plan works with your doctors, medications, and budget. Medicare’s official comparison explains the main differences from Original Medicare.

What Medicare Advantage includes

Plans cover Medicare-covered Part A and Part B services, with hospice generally paid by Original Medicare. Additional benefits may include dental, vision, or hearing coverage, but the scope and limits vary. A benefit listed in an advertisement is a starting point for questions, not a promise that every related expense is paid.

Ask for the Summary of Benefits and the Evidence of Coverage. Use those documents to confirm what a benefit covers, how often you can use it, and which providers are available.

Costs to understand

A low or $0 plan premium does not mean all care is free. You generally continue paying your Part B premium, and the plan may charge deductibles, copayments, or coinsurance. Compare expected annual costs as well as a more expensive year.

Medicare Advantage plans have a limit on covered medical out-of-pocket costs. Premiums and Part D drug costs are separate considerations. Ask which costs count toward the limit and whether out-of-network care changes it.

Provider access and coverage rules

Check your doctors, specialists, and hospitals under the exact plan. HMO and PPO arrangements can differ in referrals and out-of-network access. Some services require prior authorization. Read our Medicare HMO guide for a closer look at one common plan type.

If the plan includes Part D, compare your exact prescriptions and pharmacy. Review coverage rules as well as the projected price. A plan that fits a neighbor may produce a different result for your medication list.

Questions to bring to a comparison

  • Are my preferred doctors and facilities available?
  • What would routine appointments and a hospital stay cost?
  • Are my prescriptions covered at the pharmacy I use?
  • How do benefits work when I travel?
  • What would changing coverage later involve?

Is Medicare Advantage the same as Medigap?

No. Medigap works with Original Medicare and does not pay Medicare Advantage cost sharing. Review Medigap enrollment rights before assuming you can switch to any supplement later.

When can I change Medicare Advantage plans?

The available window depends on your circumstances. Fall Open Enrollment is one opportunity; other enrollment periods have different rules.
